WEATHER OVERVIEW

Zanzibar enjoys a warm, tropical climate with high humidity, characterized by consistently warm temperatures throughout the year. Air temperatures often exceed 30°C (86°F), and sea temperatures typically remain between 25°C (77°F) and 29°C (84°F). The island's coastal location means that the temperatures are moderated by refreshing sea breezes, especially along the North and East coasts, making it an ideal destination year-round.

Zanzibar experiences two rainy seasons and two dry seasons, each with its unique features:

  • Long Dry Season (July to October): This is the most popular time to visit Zanzibar, with clear skies, sunny weather, and minimal rainfall. Average temperatures hover around 25°C (77°F), and the weather is perfect for outdoor activities, beach relaxation, and water sports. The cooler, dry conditions also make it ideal for sightseeing and exploring the island.
  • Second Dry Season (January to Mid-March): Zanzibar's summer season and peak tourist period, with temperatures soaring up to 35°C (95°F). This is the time for sun-seekers and water enthusiasts, as the warm weather creates perfect conditions for beach activities, diving, and snorkeling. Although it's hot, the sea breezes help moderate the heat, and the ocean remains inviting.
  • Long Rains (Late March to May): The rainy season in Zanzibar, which is the quietest time of the year on the island. Intense and irregular rainfall occurs, with downpours usually lasting a few hours at a time. Although outdoor activities may be limited during the heaviest rains, the island’s natural beauty remains intact, with lush vegetation and lower tourist crowds. The warm temperatures and high humidity continue, making this a peaceful time for those seeking solitude and relaxation.
  • Short Rains (November to December): The short rainy season brings brief, light showers, typically in the form of short bursts during the late afternoon or evening. While the rain doesn't disrupt travel plans, the quieter atmosphere and fewer crowds make it a great time to explore the island. After the rain, the skies clear, and the weather remains conducive for outdoor activities, making this a pleasant period to visit.

TIDES

Tides are an integral part of life in Zanzibar, with the island experiencing two low and two high tides each day, roughly six hours apart. During low tide, you can explore the exposed coral reefs, discover vibrant marine life in the rock pools, or enjoy a leisurely walk along the stunning, powdery white, palm-fringed coastline of Kiwengwa. As the tide rises, the turquoise waters return, providing ideal conditions for swimming, snorkeling, and enjoying the clear, warm turquoise ocean just steps from your door.
